Finding out about your family’s health history could literally save your life and your children’s lives. For instance, discovering that your mother had breast cancer before menopause or that your grandparents died of heart disease is useful in determining your risk for these conditions and illnesses. But how do you go about gathering this information? Start by sitting down with your parents and sketching out the family tree. Under each relative’s name, write down as many details as you can, including pre-existing conditions (high blood pressure, diabetes) along with age and cause of death. For many, this will be enough. But what if your parents aren’t alive, or just don’t remember? You can try the family physician or the local hospital, but there is no rule as to how long they save medical records. Next, contact the National Genealogical Society. The Society has a wealth of resources and will send copies of articles on genealogy, refer you to books in the library, and suggest other sources. For your immediate benefit, women should focus on histories of heart disease, breast cancer and osteoporosis, the three major causes of health problems and death among women. According to The Women’s Health Initiative, one of the first major studies of women’s health, a family history of any the above increases your risk factor of contracting them.
