Hay-Fever: Ways to Combat It

To the 35 million hay fever sufferers in the U.S., spring breezes can be more unwelcome than winter winds. “In early April, we see the first major spike of allergies from tree pollen; around Labor Day, the ragweed spike occurs,” says Donald Pulver, M.D., chairman of the Aerobiology Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI). Here Dr. Pulver shares his best advise for a sneeze-free season:

  • Counter the effects of drowse-inducing, over-the-counter antihistamines by “dosing” yourself. Take the correct dosage at night to help you tolerate them during the day.
  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, and exposure to second-hand smoke, which can stimulate mucus production.
  • Drive with the windows closed and air conditioning on.
  • Shower, wash your hair, and change your clothes after spending time outdoors.
  • Don’t hang your sheets and clothes out to dry ~ they’ll collect pollen.

If these measures don’t help, see you doctor who can prescribe non-sedative antihistamines or cortisone nasal sprays that “reduce the symptoms dramatically without any side effect,” says Dr. Pulver (unlike over-the-counter sprays, which can be “addictive and injurious”).

Did You Know…

New therapies are currently being developed, and could help stop hay fever-related sneezing and sniffling when allergy season strikes. Look for these three in the next five years:

  • Peptide-based vaccine. Unlike with current allergy shots, only protein pieces of an allergen are injected, so the treatment is more effective and less likely to cause adverse reactions.
  • Anti-Immunoglobulin E injections. these check the release of the antibodies that defend the body against the allergen and stifle allergic reactions.
  • Cytokine injection and Leukotriene Inhibitor pill. These prevent certain chemicals from being released during an allergic reaction, thus suppressing the usual telltale symptoms.
