Americans are more health conscious than ever, yet studies show that obesity and it's numbers has increased by eight percent since 1980. Helenbeth Reiss Reynolds, R.D., a national spokesperson for the American dietetic Association, explains what’s going on ~ and what we can do about it.
We’re Eating Less Fat, More Calories:While it’s true that the percentage of fat in our diets has decreased (from 41 percent to 37 percent), the total calories we consume has increased by between 100 and 300 per day. Reynolds encourages people to use the Food Pyramid as a guise for how much, and how many servings, to eat.
We’re Too Sedantary:With our packed schedules, there’s often not much time to fit in even a half hour at the gym. Reynolds suggests you break your workout up into smaller increments: Spend 10 minutes on a stationary bike in the morning, take a 15-minute walk at lunch, then walk to pick up the kids from school.
We’re Too Busy To Plan Healthy Meals:Unfortunately, it’s usually easier to opt for ready-to-munch junk food than more nutritious selections. Reynolds emphasizes that healthy eating requires planning (like shopping and preparing food ahead of time) to ensure you always have nutritious choices available.
We’re Overwhelmed By The Idea Of Long-Term Dieting:People who need to lose 30 pounds or more are often intimidated, and thus never get started. Reynolds suggests thinking in increments: Focus on losing five pounds, them worry about the rest later.
