Water, Water Everywhere, BUT Do You Really Want to Drink it?
How Water-Quality Affects Your Health:
It is the body’s most essential nutrient, for without it we die. Yet, how often do we take the importance of water-quality for granted? The human body is about two-thirds water. Daily consumption of enough quality water is required for temperature regulation, carrying oxygen and nutrients to cells, cushioning joints, removing waste, and helping to protect our internal organs ~ for your health! For optimum health, an adult should drink about 64oz. of water a day. Most of us consume far less than the daily recommendation, and much of the water we do drink has contamination. America’s love affair with coffee, tea, soda, and alcohol has seriously affected our consumption of water. Even though these beverages are water-based, they actually act as a diuretic, causing the body to lose water, leading to dehydration. Many medical professionals believe that chronic dehydration may be the root cause of many health ailments and serious diseases.
When we want a drink of water, we turn on the facet and fill a glass. Americans enjoy one of the best supplies of drinking water in the world. But, while our tap water may meet federal and state standards, threats to the water-quality of
our drinking water, and our health, exist.
Ordinary tap water contains: chorine, minerals, sediment, chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, lead, copper, nitrates, arsenic, sulfates, radon, uranium, bacteria, viruses, and parasites. The Environmental Protection agency (EPA) has identified more than 80 unwanted substances that may be present in your municipal drinking water or well water. Some of these undesirable contaminants cause drinking water to taste or smell bad, while others can lead to serious illnesses, even death.
The Problem with Our Water?
Frankly, tap water stinks, tastes foul, is often undrinkable, and contains bad stuff. Some of that bad stuff is deliberately added, and can cause big trouble.
Chlorine was used in World War I as a weapon. It can kill. Now it’s mandated for every municipal water system as a disinfectant. Reacting with organic matter in the water it produces chloroform and trihalomethanes, both carcinogens. And two of the worst contaminants, cryptosporidium and giardia, are unaffected. According to the U. S. Council of Environmental Quality, drinking chlorinated water gives a cancer risk 93% higher, and a Norwegian study shows a 14% increase in birth defects.
Fluoride is also put in most of our tap water and leaches calcium from the teeth and bones, causing osteoporosis. Journal of the American Medical Association article (Vol. 268, 8/92) showed a 41% increase in hip fractures. According to Dr, Gary Null “It is more toxic than lead and just slightly less toxic the arsenic.”
Also, present are herbicides, pesticides, industrial chemicals, etc. The EPA found the following: a) 99 of 466 randomly tested municipal wells contaminated; b) serious groundwater contamination in 34 states; c) over 700 chemicals are in our water, 129 of those pose health threats. The National Resources Defense Council found that 43% of all municipal water systems violated Federal Health standards.
In 1993, the Milwaukee, WI city water supply was biologically contaminated, killing 100 and sickening about 400,000. In Woburn, MA 16 deaths were blamed on chemical contamination. Bacteria also killed 7 in Walkerton, ON and sickened over 2,000. According to the NY Times “Nearly 1,000 deaths each year and at least 400,000 cases of waterborne illness may be attributed to contaminated water…”
